The tattoo Katie has in the middle of her back is a Latin phrase: Alis Volat Propiis. Here is it's English translation and it's origin:
"She Flies with Her Own Wings" was adopted by the 1987 Legislature as the Oregon State motto. The phrase was written by Judge Jessie Quinn Thornton and translated into Latin for the territorial seal in 1854. "Alis Volat Propiis" is the Latin translation. Chapter 848, 1987 Oregon Laws, most clearly describes the events that led to the choice for the state's motto in 1854.
Katie chose this phrase because it's a very apropo statement reflecting her independence and confirming that regardless of her family ties, she is making her way on her own merit and talent!
The tattoo on her foot of three stars depicts Katie and her two sisters Jaime and Jenna, who also each have the same tattoo. Their mother Sherry has a tattoo with three shooting stars (the three daughters) coming from a center star (Mom). Such a wonderful symbol of how connected they all are. Each woman wears it in a different location.
